Even if you're not a hardcore purist who thinks all programming should be done on Vim, program source doesn't exist just in a "modern IDE," it also exists in version control, like GitHub, which probably has different syntax highlighting or no syntax highlighting at all. And "`this.`" is just five keystrokes. The slight added verbosity is more than compensated for by clarity, in my opinion.
